When I was a kid, I had a passion for baseball. My dad grew up in a small town 40 miles from Cincinnati and loved the Reds. His love of the game transferred to my older brother, who transferred it to me. My dad eventually moved to California, and quickly became part of the minority few who called themselves Reds fans while living in California. Nonetheless, when the Reds were in town my dad would take us to Giants, Dodgers and Padres games (depending on where we lived at the time) and we would relentlessly cheer for our Reds. We were pretty die-hard. When we couldn’t go to the games, we would try to watch them on TV. When they weren’t on TV, we would catch them on the radio. When they weren’t on the radio, well that just wasn’t any fun at all. We would have to wait until the eleven o’clock news, or as a last resort, impatiently wait until the next morning’s sport’s page. Back then we didn’t have the luxury of cable, satellite and the Internet.
The advent of ESPN and more specifically Sports Center opened up a whole new world for us sports fans. At any given moment I could switch on the tube and at the very most, wait a half hour to get the scores. And with any luck, the Reds would be featured in the telecast and I could see highlights of their game from that day. Loved it.
Along with sports on TV comes the inevitable lame commercials from Budweiser, Coors, Miller and others who promoted drinking beer, partying, and sleeping with women. These were the days previous to TIVO so we couldn’t skip commercials. I remember sitting there with my dad watching the sports highlights then going to commercials that would make both of us very uncomfortable, probably for different reasons but nonetheless, not really something a son and dad can (or should) bond over. And to this day, sex and beer sell to most of those who watch sports. Unfortunately, what the sports world fails to realize, (or worse they actually do realize it) is that so many kids watch these Sports Center-type programs and are being subjected to these tasteless, degrading commercials aimed at the party-type adults. Go to any ballpark, arena or football stadium and take a look at the number of kids in the seats. They make up a huge population of the sports fan base. How many kids do you see wearing jerseys of Ichiro, Ladanian Tomlinson, LeBron James, and others? I had one of Pete Rose when I was a kid (before I knew he bet on baseball). The point here is that kids idolize these players, watch them on TV and are being taught through commercials that in order to fit into the sports world they need to drink beer and sack chicks. Kids should be able to watch sports on TV without being subjected to these offensive commercials.
KSN – Kids Sports Network, an ESPN for kids, geared toward kids, and run by kids. I’m frankly shocked there isn’t anything like it out there. All the scores, all the highlights, but with commercials geared toward kids, not party animals. The channel could show games, have interviews, do specials on the problems in sports and talk about steroids, gambling, dog fighting and how those things really aren’t cool. Highlight the good things athletes are doing in their lives to better their families and communities. They could develop new shows or segments similar to You Tube where kids share videos of sports achievements, funny home sports clips, and cool new moves mastered on their skateboard or bike. Shows about fantasy sports leagues, kids who made it to the big leagues, and documentaries on how to become sports announcers, columnists, or color commentators. Commercials could be of sports camps, new sports video games, Gatorade, sports memorabillia, and other worthwhile things. Kids and parents would eat this kind of kids sports channel up and sponsors and advertisers would be foolish not to get in early.

I’m sure that the Kids Sports Network is a great organization, but you probably shouldn’t take issue with respect to the use of a name that is descriptive. Trademarks 101…
Ok, so I dumped it. The thinking is, it won’t work economically. The costs of establishing a network are prohibitive. And you have to be willing to wait years before cable and/or satellite providers pick you up if ever (depending on whether you can prove there is enough demand from paying viewers). To get the rights to broadcast events that kids/families want to watch you have to pay a high price and the only way you recoup that is if you find advertisers who will pay a high enough amount. Unfortunately, the beer and go-daddy type advertisers are the ones who are willing to pay the most, as is evident by the type of commercials that pop up with regularity.
I definitely appreciate your thoughts. No doubt this would be potentially very capital intensive. But, it is possible. Take Al Gore’s recent network “Current TV” - see http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/117/features-gore.html

You could also structure this to be a web-based network, which would have much lower barriers to entry.
Also, don’t discount the potential value of kids with the advertisers - have you ever heard of Disney Channel or Nickelodeon?
I think this idea would be better if it were directed more toward the family instead of kids. Especially since kids don’t generally have control over the TV during the hours sporting events and reviews are on. Maybe if it were an ESPN Family it would have a broader audience.

Regarding economics, “ARE YOU KIDDING?!” There is MAD money to be generated between sports and kids. Figurines, baseball cards, sports toys, kid’s sports drinks, it goes on forever. Not to mention the future customer base of ESPN.
The main thing I would like to see on such a channel would be for it to have tutorials explaining the sports to kids. ESPN is so filled with Jargon that many adults don’t know what they are saying half the time. Just by toning it down, explaining the game, telling the score, etc., the channel would be naturally geared towards FAMILY. Some adults may even prefer “ESPN Kids”. So PUMP IT.
Big money is waiting to be made with ESPN Kids or ESPN Family.
